This picture is a composite of two photos. The "interior" portion of the Sun was taken on February 19, 1982. The "atmosphere" portion of the Sun was taken on March 7,1970 during a total eclipse. Scott R. Anderson created the composition and added the text.  These photos are from the National Optical Astronomy Observatories.
